C.1834, Hotchkiss and Benedict, Auburn, NY, 2-weight Empire style mahogany shelf clock, 8-day.
Condition: retains original black dial, hands, movement and great label on original wall paper backing. The case was attractively refinished long ago and now with nice patina. The dial is tremendous; one minor shortcoming is that the dial shifted on the stretchers probably during shipping, and someone, not realizing you could tap the stretcher up or down, cut off around an eighth inch on top of both stretchers and added a similar amount to the bottom. Original seconds "hand" is intact, and Munger designed rack strike movement (with serial number) is clean and running. Pulleys have been replaced with STNo. 2 type, an older set would be an improvement. For reference, see the Oeschle-Boyce book titled An Empire in Time, pages 63-4-5. Munger took on Thaddeus Benedict in 1831, and in 1833 were joined by Clark Hotchkiss, a tailor knowledgeable in the use of Auburn Prison labor. Munger sold his interest in July 1834, and the resulting Hotchkiss and Benedict survived for only 2 years. Height 38 inches [95cm]
