C.1840, Japanese Bracket Clock, time, strike and calendar, delicate MOP inlaid case, fusee for time, going barrel for strike. Condition: as good as it gets; we have never seen a case as intricate as this, still in such fine condition. One opening above the dial shows the 12 Terrestrial branches, engraved on a wheel behind the dial plate and appearing one at a time. The other aperture shows the 10 Celestial Stems, similarly engraved and showing one at a time. The time scale rotates and is read at top center against a fixed hand; as with most bracket clocks, the numerals may be moved in their track for the varying length of daylight.
