C.1832, Jesse Smith, Jr., Salem, Mass., 8-day time and bell strike lyre form or "Elegant Harp Pattern" timepiece. Smith worked from 1811 to 1866. An apprentice of Benjamin Balch in Salem and in 1818-32 was in partnership with him as Balch and Smith.
Condition: Mahogany case in extra nice condition with an old finish. Dial door has some age splits. Tablets are very nice replacements with some loss to the background paint. Original painted iron dial is very nice for its age with some minor loss at the mounting pins. An example of this signature can be found on page 311 in "Willard's Patent Time Pieces by Paul Foley". Hands are period and appear to be original. Very unusual 2-wt movement is large and well made. The 2 old weights are replacements, cut down to fit channels. We looked in Foley's book on banjo timepieces and Charles Parson's book on New Hampshire Clockmaking and could not find an example of this mov't. Nicely carved mahogany crest has some age, but is probably not original. Also included is an original watch paper for Smith dated 1824. Crest wrapped inside case at preview. Ht. 41.25"
