Luman Watson, Cincinnati Tall Case Clock
, ca 1816-1822, in walnut with poplar secondary wood. With a flat pediment, paneled door and base, and high, cut-out feet. Works are a 30-hour wooden movement with the original polychrome-painted decoration including flowers in the dial arch, pinwheels in the spandrels, and L. WATSON CINCINNATI inside the chapter ring. Retains weights and pendulum; 87.5" high x 17.75" wide x 10.75" deep. The seat board on this clock is marked AD, which refers to Anson Downs (1797-1876). Downs and his brother, Ephraim, began their careers in Connecticut, but both found their way to Cincinnati about 1816. There they worked in Luman Watson's factory making 30-hour movements. Anson returned to Connecticut about 1822. Condition report Refinished, reglazed, only a few minor repairs; we do not guarantee the working order of clocks.
