C.1835, Richard Ward, Salem Bridge, Conn, Rare Chronometer Clock, 30-hour time and strike, in a large brass, "watch shaped" case, cylinder escapement. This clock is described in both Blackwell's article in the Nawcc Bulletin of April 1976, and in the
Condition: overall very good to excellent original condition. The original painted dial has some chips near attaching holes and various other losses commensurate with the age of the piece, numerals were strengthened maybe 50 years ago; minute hand's a replacement. The rack striking movement is complete, sound and running. This movement is shown in Bailey's article on page 65, bottom, that clock having a brass balance with two flat spokes, and this one having a lighter steel balance with 3 spokes. The escape wheel is over an inch in diameter and substantially made. Scholars remind us that Ward was an inventive genius, constantly trying new ideas and has many inventions to his credit. There are less than half dozen of these clocks extant. Dial = 6", ht with handle = 8"
