Rare Atkins Clock Company, 30 day Extra, ca 1869. This early rosewood case has a molded bezel opening from the bottom, flat sides by the door and a triangular bottom.

The bottom on this case is probably not original but added when the original base was broken or lost. In these first 30 day Extra clocks the movements were mounted upside down which allowed the seconds dial to be below the hand arbor and shortened the pendulum motion. This clock is running but I did not check it for running a great length of time. It could be a 30 day, or a 60 day, I do not know. This clock has a repainted 18" dial pan and three original hands. The weights are correct, brass shells, lead filled, 6.125" tall. The movements used are solid plate, positioned upside down so the verge and escape wheel are at the bottom and the crutch wire has to be positioned to connect to the pendulum in the rear of the movement instead of the front. Black felt correctly covers the inside of the case, wood stick is plain, not painted gold as with later models, and it has a heavy 8" brass bob. Case lengths varied on the Extra models, this one with a replaced base is 57" high. The lower glass is also a replacement. Door lock is intact, no escutcheon or key. "The Clocks of Irenus Atkins" by Gregory and King, page 58. We would be asking $3000 if the clock were a little more original.
