Ethel North, Torrington, Ct., ca 1824.
A miniature pillar and scroll type clock with a one day horizontal wood movement, winding at 9 and 3. The movement was a design by Ethel and his brother Norris. Ethel bought the clock shop from his brother Norris in 1824. In later years several other clockmakers in Torrington used the same east-west movement design. The mahogany veneered case is 29" tall, three brass finials are original, lower glass is probably a good copy of an original North glass. Excellent label inside, original wood dial with some restoration, pair of period iron weights, brass bob, iron bell, and period hands. The scroll top is original, breaks in scroll repaired professionally. Front feet and apron are original, back feet are replaced. Ivory escutcheon, key lock but no key. Reference::NAWCC Bulletins No. 154 and No. 161. Good articles about this maker and this movement and clock.
