Atkins Clock Company, Bristol, Ct. rare, "No. 1 Cottage", ca 1860.
The 15.5" high rosewood case has rounded side columns, beveled door trim, and concave trim below the columns. The door knob is correct, and the case is excellent having no damage except tiny edge nicks. The original finish is crusty. There is a full orange paper label, a mirror in the door that is original and correct for the No. 1 Cottage. The dial was repainted many years ago, now showing some age and minor scratches. The 8 day movement is said to be their, "second production version", with the count wheel located in front of the strike spring. The only thing keeping the clock from being near perfect is the top glass. It is missing the gold designs. The top glass is old and wavy, but most likely a replacement. Read, "The Clocks of Irenus Atkins", by Gregory and King, pages 8485. We sold an identical clock in the July 2006 auction for nearly $2000.
