Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co. calendar clock, "Advocate", ca 1879.
Unusual and rare calendar clock that was made only one year. The calendar mechanism was called, "Hayden Lunar Calendar", and was used in several Gilbert clocks that one year. The simple calendar mechanism was a flop. Gilbert touted it as a marvel of simplicity. You must read what all the calendar mechanism would do. After one year Gilbert realized they had a big loser so they dumped the rest of their stock down south. Did they think we southerners were dopes? A label in this clock says, "Manufactured by Geo. S. Turner, Jackson, Miss." The mahogany veneered case is nice, has very few problems, the glass, dial, hands, nickel bell, and pendulum, are all original. The running movement is 8 day, running briskly and striking on the bell. Ly-Gilbert, pages 70-71, and 305.
