Moncas, Liverpool, English two day marine chronometer in a 3-tier case with brass corners on top and bottom only, c1860

the mahogany box has been refinished, with stress cracks and repairs and the dial needs professional refinishing, as it went without a crystal for some time and is etched by the elements, and now polished to brass. The chain fusee movement is intact, has no rust nor corrosion, and is running robustly. In this early chronometer, the key attaches to the winding arbor with a set screw, and the movement never had a shroud for a later style key, nor does the tub have a cover or shutter for the keyhole (never did). Gimbal, tub and movement appear original to the case, rotates in all directions, but front screw does rub on the rear of the box as it passes. Moncas were retailers of repute in Liverpool, but were not actually clockmakers as literature would suggest, the dial is identified with serial #9043. Note small movement diameter = 2.83" [7.2cm], Dial = 3.5" OD. Box width = 6" [15.3cm], ht of box 6.6" [16.8cm]
