Benjamin Chandlee, Nottingham, (PA), a Chester County brass dial, bell strike movement, C.1770 associated with a central Delaware mahogany case with scalloped top door, reeded side columns w/ simple brass capitals, a broken arch hood and deeply carved

it is likely, based on the age of the added upright blocks, that this marriage occurred 150 years ago. The well made Chandlee movement has typical smooth barrels, and a cast brass dial plate. It appears that the dial spandrels, now cast brass, were perhaps changed from the original gilt pewter, however it may just be a late dial. Seconds hand is original; hour and minute hands are old replacements. Top final should be a bold wooden job, not brass [is old]. Bottom feet and skirt molding are Victorian replacements; should be separate OG bracket feet less skirt. And finally the recessed panel in the base is indicative of a c.1790s case. Earlier Chandlee cases almost all had applied panels. For reference see James E. Arthur's . "CHESTER COUNTY CLOCKS AND THEIR MAKERS", also "Six Quaker Clockmakers" by descendant Edw Chandlee (1943), a later edition of which is included with this lot. If all original, this clock would be valued at $50,000. Ht 98"
