G. Chandlee, Winchester (Virginia), a painted dial, center seconds, rolling moon, 8-day movement, C.1790, now in a mahogany veneer over heavy hardwood case from the same period. (1790)
Goldsmith Chandlee was well known as both a clock and instrument maker. This well made movement has smooth barrels, a precise Graham dead beat escapement, (with 'scape wheel set in the center of the plates), an iron false plate to accept the 4 dial feet, and heavy baluster pillars with turned trim rings. The attractive case has a look appropriate for the period, however the risers have been extended to accept this movement. The well figured veneer on the case is accented by cross banding around the door and on the plinth. Quarter columns on plinth and trunk are reeded and with wooden capitals that are appropriate. Dial signature is still good and untouched and hands are original. There is paint loss at the locations of the dial feet and some paint loss on the rolling moon. For reference, see "Six Quaker Clockmakers" by descendant Edw Chandlee (1943) Note: Goldsmith Chandlee was oldest son of Benjamin Chandlee, Jr. who made the clock in lot 870. Ht 89". The sweep seconds hand is loose.
