Benjamin Morrill, Boscawen, NH, presentation banjo, gilt rope front, weight driven, 8-day, c1840

this is a generally good old banjo, with a nice handmade movement with straight click and coiled end click spring; note semi-circular cut out at bottom of plates, typical of NH work. The gilding was restored maybe 75 years ago, and with some loss and curling at this time. Note there is one piece of rope molding lacking on the lower door. There is considerable flaking in the border area of the tablets; note the style and motif of the painting is 19th century, but these might have been restored a hundred years ago; doesn't seem to be 160 years of loss.
