Simon Johnson, Sanbornton, New Hampshire, 8 day weight driven gallery time piece, c1838
Anonymous (not verified)
24 October 2024
This large early wall clock is unsigned, but the attribution to England-born Johnson is clear, based on David Sperling's October 2011 article in Maine Antique Digest (stored inside the case) on this family of New Hampshire clockmakers. The arched plate brass movement is distinctive, and there also are old repairer notes and card inside. The movement is clean and running, and has an ingenious system for starting the pendulum from the top of the case. The painted wood dial has the expected light cracking, and the round wood case has very old and dark bubbled varnish. This is a rare example of New Hampshire clock making Overall diameter 28"
