England, paper mache bracket clock, the Japanned case with a repeating, gilt leaf border, the front with floral swags, front of base with trailing vine and edged with a gilt line, case sides with trophies, top with central patera and floral sprays, cast brass carrying handles, brass bezel with convex glass, Arabic numeral, white painted sheet iron dial, brass hands, two train week going fusee movement with decorative engraving on back plate and pendulum, #213, c1820 case dirty and with losses to decoration, feet with chips and losses, base sagging a bit from weight of movement, Japanning with crazing and minor curling on case front at 9 - 10:00, and on the right side near the carrying handle, bezel and brass hardware correct, glass good, dial with inpainting and touch ups, and a pattern of crazing overall, minute hand replaced, rear door with replaced fabric, movement dirty, runs and strikes, reinforcement added to inside of case to distribute weight of movement, Ht 14 3/4" A rare survival, as the case is quite fragile, and it supports a very heavy movement. The case may have been made at Birmingham, Wolverhampton, or Pontypool, which were centers of production for Japanned wares during the 18th and 19th centuries. Much of the decoration remains, and could be cleaned by a qualified conservator.
