Dutch, Jean Van Ceule, Le Jeune, a La Haye (the Hague), 8 days, brass dial tall clock, hour striking with single bell at half hour, in its well made Dutch marquetry case, from the collection of Doug Shaffer, c1730
this is an attractive step top case with cross band inlay to case edges and columns, with large floral inlays with birds and vases. The well detailed brass dial with chieftain spandrels and dolphin corners in the arch, the arch with selector for "Silence - Sonne'", and with a calendar aperture above 6, matt center, and seconds bit below 12, fully engraved border, and with original hands, and the maker's name engraved on a cartouche below the hand shaft. The top jacks of Atlas and two angelic Trumpeters are proper recent replacements from Amsterdam. This case shows a lot of English influence, with small plinth and conservative size compared to later Dutch designs. Original brass cased weights. Ht without finials, 99", and complete, around 9 feet.
