The U.S.S. Raleigh of this clock's era was a United States Navy cruiser commissioned in 1894 and in service until 1919. She served in both the Spanish-American War and World War I. Raleigh is credited with firing the first shot of the Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish-American War. She was filmed with an early motion picture camera by Thomas Edison's company in 1899: The heavy brass case is stamped "ER" at the top, perhaps for "Engine Room". The case is tarnished and has some scratches. The bezel glass is missing. Key for locking bezel is present and working. The silvered dial is very tarnished with some yellow areas -- either brass or bad lacquer. Minute hand has surface rust. The rate adjustment hole in the dial was plugged and moved up to accommodate the arbor. Movement ticks. Movement serial number 41978 This in one of a very few clocks in this auction connected to a known naval vessel. An image of the U.S.S. Raleigh may be found here: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2b/Raleigh_%28Cruiser_…
