Ecalle, Horloger de la Marine, 93- 94 Palais Royal, Paris, a monumental Belgian slate, gilt bronze mounted, grand sonnerie mantel clock, on gilt, gadrooned feet, the base with incised panels and deep cavetto molding, and hung with a gilt, fruit and foliate festoon, the recessed corners with gilt caryatids supporting the cavetto molded cornice and arch top, the arch with central lion mask and foliate ornament issuing from its mouth, the top with gilt scrolls flanking a stone plinth surmounted by a turned, gadrooned and acanthus ornamented finial, engraved, gilt dial with scrolling foliage, Roman numeral chapter ring and subsidiary sonnerie/silence selector, and with retailers name and address within a blank reserve below the dial, finely cut and finished blued steel hands, and massive three train, quarter striking fusee movement, sounding the quarters and hours on five gongs dirty, slate with minor flakes and chips, right side of base with crack, right side molding above cavetto with crack, plinth with chips below finial, finial loose, feet loose, front door lower hinge detached from case, upper hinge bent, dial with minor losses to numerals, hands with minor specks of oxide, rear glass with chips and substantial loss at upper right, movement dirty, ticks, strikes, and chimes correctly, pendulum rod replaced. Auguste Ecalle was located at the Palais Royal, Galerie Beaujolais, from 1880- 90. He was known for his work with precision timekeepers and chronometry, and was agent for Dent in Paris.
