Ansonia Clock Co., New York, for Bull Durham Tobacco, advertising clock, 30 hour, spring driven balance wheel movement in a wood case wrapped in cloth to resemble a bail of tobacco, black steel dial with advertising in gold print reading in part "Genuine Durham Tobacco / Durham, N.C.", gold colored spade hands. The cloth wrapping has darkened and has as small tear starting along the top front edge. Paper labels applied over the cloth are mostly intact except along the top edges of the box. The green paper label on the back is particularly nice. The dial is in very good condition. There is a small loss of paint and some rust around the lower left mounting screw. The signed Ansonia movement ticks when prompted. Bull Durham Smoking Tobacco was started sometime in the 1850s and lasted until the late 1980s. The brand is known for its innovative advertising efforts, this piece being a fine example. This clocks is in better condition than most of this type that we have seen.
