Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co., Winsted, Conn., "Latona" mantel clock, 8 day, time and strike, spring driven movement in a walnut case.
Case retains an original finish with some scratches, especially around the base. A small piece of molding has a missing section on the lower left side. The door glass is wavy. Original paper dial has darkened with age and has a light scratch below near the 6 o'clock position, and a few water stains on the right side. Partial rear labels from the manufacturer and a jeweler. The signed movement is stamped with a patent date of 1879. The stopworks are partially incomplete. Heavy cathedral gong is original. The hands are original. This model was Gilbert's attempt to compete with the "Garfield", a poplar Seth Thomas model of very similar design. Earlier models employed a hybrid weight/spring movement. This is a later version which is entirely spring driven.
