The pressboard is in good condition. The baby's forehead shows signs of a crease and the upper corners of the sign on the base have been slightly damaged. The printed colors are still nice. There are some small brown spots on the image around the edges. Nice rear paper label which specifies the terms under which the sign was to be granted to storekeepers. Unsigned spring driven movement has the appearance of many Connecticut-made clocks movements. The mechanism works well, causing the father to rock back and forth in his chair, while his arm moves up and down as if in the act of shaving his face. The Gem Cutlery Company started in 1898. Its first product, the Gem Safety Razor advertised on this sign, was a best seller and went on to be a product of The American Safety Razor Corporation.
