C.1860, French Quarter Striking Lantern clock, in the Normandy style of 1790, with restoration.

This is an interesting clock, primitive in concept and operation, and still very robust with the potential to last another few hundred years. The 3 rope drive trains are front to back rather than side by side, the time wheels behind the dial followed by the hour strike in the center, and at the rear, the quarter strike train. The qtr hour is struck on 2 bells (ding dong). The hour follows on a still larger bell, only after the 4 quarters are sounded at the top of the hour. The anchor with recoil escapement is original to the movement, and helps us date it mid 19th century.

re-issue. The originals of these clocks were produced largely in the 1600s. Though there were Victorian copies of these, the clocks signed "Moore" were made in the 20th century, as fakes, and often sold as originals. This is a well made, factory produced clock, made to good standards with a seconds pendulum, the dial signed: Tho. Moore, Ipswich. It now has an iron OG weight that is insufficient to operate the clock, however weights are available from various vendors (see ads section in catalog). From storage, dirty but sound and complete.
