C.1935, German, Whistling Man at Lampost shelf clock
The figure has a brown overcoat, a red and white polka dot tie, and a black top hat. The clockwork whistling mechanism is wound with a key from the rear, and the head turns from side to side while he whistles. This particular clock has the Karl Griesbaum insignia on the bottom battery cover, plus the rear of the base and again on the metal lantern. The mechanism is wired so that the light in the lantern blinks while the man whistles, however we cannot ascertain whether that portion still works (it looks intact).
C.1935, German, Whistling Man in Jacket and Blue Tie shelf clock
Another Griesbaum carved wooden novelty from the second quarter of the 20th century; the figure has a brown jacket and tan slacks and a large blue bow-tie with white polka dots, and a well worn Bavarian style hat. The clockwork whistling mechanism is wound with a key from the rear, and the head turns from side to side while he whistles. There are some minor nicks and scrapes to the figure, but he is overall in very good condition and still whistles nicely. The base with an old ink stamp for "Germany", and a faded pencil price. Height 13"
C.1935, German, Whistling Drunk at Lampost shelf clock
The figure has a brown overcoat and a liquor bottle in his right pocket. The clockwork whistling mechanism is wound with a key from the rear, and the head turns from side to side while he whistles. The cap to the lantern is recently made of sheet brass; the light in the lantern is not currently working, and the bottom battery door cover for the light source is missing. Still the carving is very crisp and the colors well defined. Virtually all of these whistling figures were made by the Karl Griesbaum Co.. Height 18"
C.1900, French, "JESTER" animated Bell ringer alarm clock
in good condition. This clock looks to be 98 percent original; some touchup to the face and eyebrows of the jester (done long ago, and with additional wear). Hands do not match, but this is a wonderful little novelty that does not turn up often. Ticks and alarms in lively fashion (jester wags the bell in his left hand). Height 11 inches
C.1890, French, Musical Bird Automaton and clock, with dome
This is a large unit, top bird at rest, and center humming bird that appears to "flit" from branch to branch, the bottom bird tipping as if to drink from the "fountain", a turning rod of glass (in little alcove next to the clock). The center bird has lost some feathers on his breast, but still looks very much like a humming bird. The trees and shrubs in this unit are dark green and with lots of tiny light gray blossoms. With a two tune, pull wind music box that may be activated either independently or in conjunction with the key wind tweeting bird mechanism.
