Wall Picture
Musical month-going picture clock with seven tunes, from the estate of the Empress Eugenie of France (wife of Napoleon III).
The picture is based on a 1871 contemporary cartoon showing France (la Belle Francaise?) surrendering to Austria, and was probably commissioned by the Empress when she fled to Britain, where she lived for the remainder of her life. In original condition; approx 4'x 3', in full working order, with some original documents, including an original of the journal in which the cartoon appeared - should be in a French museum, perhaps! Movements French/Swiss circa 1870 s (?). A real piece of history!

C.1820, Austrian, Gilded Frame Grand Sonnerie wall clock 8-Day, with pull wind 2-tune music box in base, as-found.
Condition: this clock has suffered in its life; the original gold leaf has been painted over with gold paint. The bezel for the dial is absent, and the porcelain dial with hairlines. The dial plate is now screwed to the wooden case with sheet metal screws. The pendulum bob is OK, but the rod has been replaced with a narrow piece of sheet brass, a hook added for the silk suspension. The music box has had some amateur solder repairs, but all teeth are intact, and it plays in a lively fashion. A trip lever from the movement actuates the music periodically during the day.
C.1880, German, picture frame clock, 30-hour time/strike.
Condition: Painted wood case in good condition with the original gold leaf on picture frame now painted gold. The simple rectangular door that should cover the picture frame is now missing. Tablet and reverse painted dial are original. Hands are original. Case houses a small wood plate movement with brass gears. Pendulum appears to be original. Lovely picture of a gypsy dancer with gold rings. Height 14.75 inches
C.1920, English "Big Ben" Picture clock,
a 30 hour movement, wound through the front of the painting, and with an auxiliary "musical chine" movement, which is a short cylinder musical movement that plays the parts of Westminster Chime. Condition: the rear cover has been changed from the whole box being hinged at the bottom, to just the rear cover being hinged at the side. The "musical" movement is complete and sound, but is hung up at the moment and not playing. Clock ticks and stops. Dial has been restored with a "porc-a-like" cover.
French picture frame clock, in a typical case, wood with plaster over the frame then painted black.
The frame is rolled all around the out-side edge. A piece of glass is also over the inner section where the decorations are located. The designs inside are a zillion pieces of Mother of Pearl inlaid in wood. I notice a few small pieces missing but you have to study the designs before you pick it up. Under all that is an onyx dial, now with hairline cracks. As the dial is glued to a thin piece of wood I doubt the dial broke apart and was reglued. I think it is just hairlines. Large cartouche numerals on the onyx dial. Large, typical 8 day movement, springs enclosed in barrels.
French picture frame clock, ca 1870
Typical of many others we have sold; only this one is in a little better condition than most, and is running real well.8 day movement striking a coil gong on the hours. Porcelain dial is under glass cover and signed, "Roubaud, St Mihiel". A plethora of mother of pearl inlaid around a light colored wood design, everything else is black which makes the dial and pearl designs show better. The wood case is almost 20 inches high, 16 inches wide. Probably overall one of the nicer ones
