C.1830, Sylvester Clarke, Salem-Bridge, Conn., mantel clock
early shelf clock with restorations. Sylvester designed a slightly different movement than Heman, but still placed the escape wheel outside the plates, above the center shaft-see detail image. The top support for the movement has been newly made and left old holes unfilled; top carved splat is suspect, however this carving is 3" wider than a triple deck carving and may just be original. Old feet are from another clock and bottoms of the columns are newly made with contrasting inlay. Dial was purpose made out of wood and professionally painted (high quality). The 8-day movement has some repairs but seems to tick and strike. Both glasses with corner cracks; good label. Would be $4500 if original. Height 29" See also lot 319. Should be tempting at $1000-1500
