C.1880, "Gale Drop Calendar No. 1" wall clock
8-day time and strike, as manufactured by Welch, and in good condition, with some paint touch-up to the dial (near calendar numerals 2+3) the case well polished, and the graining now absent from the top bezel. The gold leaf tablet is a Barathy replacement (as good as you can find). The label is faded and torn, with a large chunk missing (see detail image). The center calendar hand was broken at the hub, and soldered with acid core solder and the hand has rusted a bit. Despite these shortcomings, this is a good clock that is difficult to find. Several books discuss the Gale patents, this model with 5 dials, showing the regular time, date, day of the week, lunar calendar, and month with equation of time dial, showing sunrise and sunset times for each week. If in all original condition, we would have expected it to bring $5500. Height 30 inches
