Atkins & Downs column and splat clock, ca 1828.
"Manufactured by Atkins & Downs for George Mitchell, Bristol, Conn", ca 1828. George Mitchell was a brother in law to the Atkins brothers. He was very influential in bringing competent craftsmen to Bristol, like, Jerome, Ingraham, Downs. He traded for movements and cases and assembled them in his shop. Ingraham invented this carved case clock while working for Mitchell. This 30 hour wood movement transition clock has a beautiful carved splat, pineapple finials, paw feet. Columns are full round and stenciled. Excellent wood dial, full label, period weights, pendulum, and hands. An outstanding original painted tablet, both glasses with original putty. 30 inch patterned mahogany veneer case, ivory escutcheon. The lock is missing a piece where the key inserts, these can be ordered from Timesavers.
