Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co. shelf clock, "Stella", C. 1879.
This is an early shelf clock with unusual designs and ornaments. 8 day, gong strike, running. The case is 15.5" high; the catalog says it is ebonized and steel bronze. Bubba removed the brass leaves on the four corners of the door, the two ornaments on the base, and painted everything else black, covering the unusual bronze designs that are all around the door and base. As if that wasn't enough he installed red velvet inside the case. I tried lacquer thinner on one end and it will remove the black paint leaving the bronze designs. There is some old design in the dial center, not sure what it was. Glass is replaced, original Gilbert rate adjusting brass pendulum, brass gong base, brass dial ring and hands. It beats me how some people can mess up a nice clock. Ly-Gilbert #1072.
