Plain but exceptionally nice Victorian style walnut case, 23.5" high. The case maker had a nice design and added etchings, turnings, and applied decorations to spiff up the case, and the final result is very appealing. What is unusual about this clock is the alarm system. The strike side of the movement was replaced with a 24 hour internal alarm, patented by T. W. Wood, an Englishman, who's only horological contribution was this alarm system. The alarm gear turns once in 24 hours, and only alarms once each 24 hours. The mechanism is wound weekly. The alarm sounds as two hammers strike a gong and bell alternately. Jerome and Seth Thomas were the only American clockmakers known to use the Wood alarm. Jerome put the silencing lever on the left side; Seth Thomas put it on top of the case. The 8 day movement is a New Haven Clock Co. product with the strike train replaced by the alarm. All Jerome & Co. timepieces have labels giving full credit to T. W. Wood and all utilize the same case. There are two labels on the back; both are in reference to the alarm system.
