Clock, rare Chauncey Jerome, 8 day American fusee wall clock.CIRCA: 1823-1844 SIZE: 22" x 15" x 4 1/2" with a 10" dial MAKER: Chauncey Jerome, Bristol CT DESCRIPTION: The clock movement is a fusee, week duration, without strike. The actual fusee is tapered like its English counterparts. 90% of American clocks were of one day duration. The clock was professionally rebuilt and keeps accurate time. The back plate is signed " Chauncey Jerome, New Haven Connecticut USA". See additional photos. This clock was made prior to 1840, after 1840 they were marked either Jerome and Co. or Jerome Manufacturing Co. Chauncey Jerome apprenticed and worked for the famous clockmaker Eli Terry from 1816 to 1822. The case is rosewood veneer with its original finish. There is no damage or missing veneer. There is a small shrinkage crack above and below the pendulum aperture. The carved walnut side pieces are original. There is a hinged door on the bottom right side for pendulum access. The entire back is hinged for access to the mechanism, which slides out. The hinge screws apparently pulled out at one time and the door was reversed. The original bezel is heavy cast brass, the original hands are also heavy cast metal. The old enamelled zinc dial was restored some time ago. The old dial has a plugged hole, 2" below the center hole. This is a relatively small clock, only 22" long and extremely rare.
