Southern Calendar Clock Co. "Fashion No. 4", ca 1880.
With one exception this is an original clock, in very good condition. It has been in the central Kentucky area since the wagon trains from St. Louis came thru Kentucky selling the Fashions to local farmers, on time payments. They would pay after the tobacco crop was sold in the fall of the year. Everything on this clock is original, finials, pendulum, glass, dials, and hands. The only thing that keeps the clock from being completely original is that some barn painter painted the upper dial without removing the dial ring. It looks OK until you get close and see white paint on the dial ring. I would not get excited and repaint it because then you would have to repaint the bottom dial even though it is original and looks good. The original Seth Thomas movements are functioning properly and there is a good interior black and gold label. The gilt on the etched dial board is still very good. As usual, I found nothing in the secret compartment. This Fashion is about as original and nice as we get. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 63.
