Wm. L. Gilbert shelf calendar, the "Elberon", ca 1901.
This is a pretty uncommon calendar clock, particularily one that is this nice. The 28 inches high oak case is exceptionally clean considering it has never been cleaned or refinished. It has old crazing in all the grooves. This is a clock for those collectors that want their clocks all original. The black glass with reverse painting is very good, gold around the calendar and dial, also very good. The dial, pendulum, and calendar rods, are all original and very nice. The two black and gold labels inside, and the Elberon label on the back, are as nice as you could hope for in a clock over 100 years old. The movement is 8 day, gong strike, running briskly. The calendar is not perpetual and consists of three metal discs. The upper movement has a lift arm which changes the day of the week and date. The month must be moved manually. The only thing that would keep me from touting the clock as near perfect is a little simple door latch, kitchen clock style, that I think I could install, but I don't work on clocks. Ly-Gilbert No. 164.
