Kentucky tall clock case with a Luman Watson wood movement, ca 1820.
Mahogany case by Elijah Warner, a Lexington, Kentucky clock maker 1810-1829. Either he made cases only, for customers who had a movement, or he bought movements and put in his cases. This is the second case we have had in the last year with a Luman Watson movement. The dial is signed, "L.Watson Cincinnati". This is a beautiful case of mixed mahogany grains, three carved finials on the broken arch top, four carved columns on each corner of the bonnet, two carved columns each side of the door. A base came with the case, (see the side picture) but we cannot say with certainty that it is original to the case. Without the base, the clock is 93.5 inches tall. With the base, it is 100 inches tall. That will work with eight-foot ceilings, or will look better with higher ceilings using the base. The painted wood dial is beautiful, no damage, plenty of gold and color. Calendar and seconds dial with matching hands. The hands are original or at least period; the same with the tin can weights and old pendulum bob. Door has a working lock, with key. The wood movement by Watson is in running condition, or was when we removed the clock from a Lexington home. I believe it has spent its 175 years right here in the Bluegrass.
