C.1805, L. and A. Hutchins, Concord, NH, 8-day, 2-weight, maple tall case clock, with bracket feet, fretwood top, and a nice amount of tigering in the wood.
Condition: the case has been professionally refinished and has a nice gloss. The maple has strong tiger accents throughout the case and is very striking. The fret is old, been repaired a couple of times. Levi and Abel Hutchins were apprentices of Simon Willard, before setting up shop in Concord. Like most clockmakers of the day, they bought the rough movement kits from England and finished them in their own workshop. The clock has a nice English painted dial with roses in the corners and arch , and is well signed with original signature. This clock is from the collection of J. Cheney Wells, Sturbridge, Mass No. 142, and with ID plaque inside door. Mr. Wells was for years the president of the American Optical Company at Southbridge, Mass, and he and his brother had formed Old Sturbridge Village around 1950. Also with a calling card from Bradford Cheney, 186 Warner Ave, Worcester, Mass, who had maintained this clock for years prior to his death. A clock of modest proportions that will fit in any home.
