C.1833, Joshua Seward, Boston, Mass., 8-day Lyre or Elegant Harp Pattern wall timepiece, weight driven.
Condition: Refinished carved mahogany case in extremely nice condition. Painted tablet is on old glass, but is recently painted by a skilled artist. Metal show at top of harp is recent. The bottom of the bracket has been repaired to fix a break just above the bottom drop finial. Dial with strengthened numbers has the faint remains of the name Seward and in our opinion, is original to the case. The notches in the dial line up with existing holes for L-turn pins. Someone at a later date has drilled holes for screws to mount the dial. The period movement is secured to the one-piece mahogany backboard held by taper pins through posts screwed into the back board. Seward was an apprentice to John Sawin of Boston who used the same method to secure his movements into his cases. Nice set of period hands. The plinth on top of the case is missing. The carved top is old and proper. From an old time collector and unseen for decades. Ht 38.25" [97.1 cm]
