Luman Watson, Cincinnati Tall Case Clock,
ca 1816-1825, in cherry with poplar secondary wood. The hood has a broken-arch pediment with carved rosettes, turned finials, 4 fully turned columns, and a tombstone "door" (with old, wavy glass). The waist has a cockbeaded door and fluted quarter-columns, and the paneled base has fluted stiles and turned feet. Works are a 30-hour wooden movement with the original polychrome-painted dial with flowers in the spandrels and dial arch and L. WATSON CINCINNATI inside the chapter ring. Retains weights and pendulum; 98" high x 17" wide x 10.25" deep. Luman Watson (1790-1834) purportedly produced over 30,000 tall clock works in his career. Being so prolific, he appears to have been buying cases from whomever he could. His cases vary wildly, including this unusual variation that has no actual door to access the dial. Instead, the entire hood must be removed. Another case with this feature is featured as lot 7, and another sold at Garth's Auctions (Delaware, Ohio), September 2-3, 2005, lot 101. Condition report Old refinish with mellow color, age crack, possible later nails added to cove moulding; we do not guarantee the working order of clocks.
