A Very Fine Luman Watson,
Cincinnati Tall Case Clock, ca 1816-1825, in cherry and mahogany with poplar secondary wood. The hood has four columns and a broken-arch pediment that appears to retain its original finials. The case has a scroll-cut and moulded door with cross-banded mahogany veneer, canted corners, and a voluptuously shaped skirt and cutout feet. With a 30-hour wooden movement, marked by Watson, and with flowers in the spandrels and an eagle in the dial arch. Retains an old, rich finish with a desirable surface; 95.25" high x 17.25" wide x 9" deep. The case is signed on the inside J. Dunn No. 4. The receipt from Ted and Harriet Schmitt (Fairhaven, Ohio) indicates that Dunn was a Kentucky cabinetmaker and that the clock descended in the Cools (or Cook) family until about 1980. LATE ADDITION: This clock case is actually firmly attributable to the shop of Elijah Warner of Lexington, Kentucky (worked ca 1810-1820). Among the characteristics this case shares with other Warner cases are the distinctive crest on the waist door and the stout urn finials. Warner is known to have employed other cabinetmakers in his shop, including, presumably, J. Dunn. Condition report A few minor age cracks, minor paint flecks (easily removed), repair to center finial, weights are appropriate replacements. We do not guarantee the working order of clocks.
