Read and Watson Clock in H. Moore Case,
cherry and maple, with poplar secondary. Broken arch pediment with carved rosettes, and old, possibly original, ebonized finials (one broken). Hood has no door, but retains original glass, and is surrounded by 4 free-standing curly cherry columns. Thick band of curly maple decorates waist just under top cove molding. Waist has canted corners with lamb's tongues at top and bottom, and arch top, thumb-molded door. Base also has canted corners with lamb's tongues, and a large, 5-pointed star inlaid in walnut and maple at center. Very finely shaped skirt sits atop French feet. Case is attributed to Wilmington, Ohio cabinetmaker Haines Moore, (1815-40s). The polychrome and gilt dial is signed, Read & Watson (in partnership prior to being in Cincinnati from ca 1810-1816), and has floral-decorated spandrels and dial arch. Seat board to the 30-hour wooden movement is stamped ED for Ephraim Downs, indicating manufacture after 1815. Several pencil inscriptions on back of face indicate maintenance and cleanings dating back to nineteenth century. A beautiful clock. 98.5" high x 17" wide x 9.5" deep.Ex Paul A. Heffner Collection. As above, nice, old refinish, a few small repairs, else VG.
