C.1833 Eli Terry Jr., Plymouth, Conn, "Lion and Unicorn" Carved column and splat with 30-hr time and strike wood movement (short), for Canadian market.
Condition: Outstanding condition with large carved splat and heavily carved columns. Both glasses are original with their original putty. The lower tablet has some paint loss mostly at the top in the sky. The dial is untouched. The splat is the finest of carvings in both quality and size. There is an (old) horizontal gap of half inch in the backboard at the top of the movement that is unexplained, and a matching gap at the bottom of the movement. Old strips of label on the rear indicate this clock was originally sold in Canada. Although this top is original, Mr. Hoch carved a copy of this which he donated to the American Clock and Watch Museum, and that carving still hangs over a doorway in Bristol. For details on this model, see Tran Ly's book American Clocks, Vol 3, page 65, also showing this exact crest in detail. Height 42 inches
