Ansonia Clock Co. "Monarch", ca 1880.
This is one of their high end mantle clocks, has a wood urn on top, a drawer in the base, it is doubled on the sides meaning two ornaments in duplicate on each side, a ladies bust on top, and some intricately carved pieces all over. The 24.5" case is made of black walnut, has bronze ornaments and a French sash. This clock has the original crusty finish, and is very dark and smoky. The case has the original dial, fancy bezel, a special two barrel pendulum, and a signed 8 day movement with the alarm movement in the bottom. The drawer was stuffed with newspaper clippings and a letter written by an exotic dancer who owned the clock and sold it to some friends. It seems the dancer shot her husband who had taken up with a younger woman. She kept a 16' long python in the house. No wonder the husband crawled in bed with another woman. Another article told about the python and how she was selling her large home and moving to Europe. The letter was written to the couple who had bought this clock from her. The tale is too long to tell here. Ly-Ansonia No. 1780.
