Wm. Cummens, Roxbury, Mass., banjo wall clock, 8 days, time only, weight driven banjo with T-bridge suspension in cross banded mahogany case with reverse painted throat and lower tablets and painted metal dial, c1815
the case has been refinished and is in very nice clean condition. The War of 1812 tablets are replacements and very well done. Door opens with an L turn. Original painted dial is unusual with 5-minute markers and some minor paint losses on the edges. The signature is worn but recognizable as Warranted by Wm. Cummens". The alternate train movement with T-bridge suspension is mounted to the case with original through bolts, fillister style. The finial is a modern replacement. The moon hands are of the period, with repairs. A weight stop has been added below the movement. Several examples of this movement and dial signature can be found in Paul Foley's book "Willard's Patent Time Pieces", pages 34 - 37. This specific clock sold for $3300 plus 15% buyer's premium in our May 15th & 16th, 2010 sale. Ht 29 1/4"
