Terry, Plymouth, Conn., balance wheel mantel clock, short drop, 30 hours, time and strike, weight driven movement with exposed oversize balance wheel (above 6) and exposed escape wheel (below 12) in a mahogany veneer Empire case with painted wooden dial and period mirror tablet, c1845 the case retains its original finish nicely rubbed down. The dial has some restoration. The gong base appears to be a period replacement. The minute hand may be a replacement. The period weights are unusual rectangular 30 hours, weights. Silas' father, Eli Terry Sr. was granted his last patent in 1845 for a balance escapement movement with a very large balance wheel, which Silas then put into production. Doug Shaffer bought this clock very late in his collecting career from his old friend Rose Brandt. Ht 27 3/4"
