Aubert and Klaftenberger, London, a fine, small, week going English carriage timepiece, the gilt case with foliate engraving, the corners with chased, leaf decorated columns, and signed "L. Lange", Roman numeral silvered dial, the center also with

case with minor losses to gilding, one finial replaced, dial with minor tarnish, numerals with some fading, hands good, movement with minor scratches, marks and stains, some screws with marred slots, running. The partnership of Aubert & Klaftenberger was created in 1835 by the union of two watch retailers, C.J. Klaftenberger of London, and D.F. Aubert of Geneva. The firm was a favorite of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, who often ordered clocks and watches to be presented as gifts. The company also exhibited work at the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851, showing complicated watches, a half seconds beating regulator with remontoire, as well as pocket and marine chronometers. While many high quality French carriage clocks bearing the name of the firm are known, English made examples are rare. The case maker L. Lange is known for his high quality work, for both French and English makers. See Roberts, "Carriage and other Travelling Clocks", page 348, for a nearly identical Lange case.
