Shelf or Mantel Cottage

Forestville Manufacturing Co., J. C. Brown, Bristol. Conn. Cottage shelf clock in a rosewood veneered case with gilt decoration and a spring driven, 8 days, time and strike movement, c1850.

The case retains some original finish, the gilt decoration with loss. There is minor veneer damage along the bottom edge of the case. The movement is signed. Dial is nicely repainted. The hands are original. The lower door glass tablet has had some restoration. The upper glass door has its original gilt and black design with black paint added to stabilize. (originally asphaltum). Ht 14 3/4".

Atkins Clock Co., Bristol, Conn., 8 days, time and strike, spring brass movement "London" model shelf clock, c1865

Rosewood veneered case in original finish with a small chip on the left corner of the base and slight damage at the corner below left column. Original painted dial has wear with some stains and minor loss at mounting screws. Original hands, and tablets. Tip to the minute hand is broken off, but included. Clean interior label. Ht 14 3/4"

Atkins Clock Co., Bristol, Conn. Cottage mantel clock in a rosewood veneered case with a spring driven, 8 days, time and strike movement, c1870.

The rosewood case is in excellent condition with some of its original finish still intact. The painted dial has both discoloration and paint loss. The hands are original. The bottom door mirror is old, if not original. The original upper door glass with black and gilt decoration is in very good condition with some minor loss of the black paint, The label is one of the best we have seen. Ht 15 3/4".

Mahogany and rosewood veneered case in original finish. Both tablets are original. Original painted dial is soiled and has some minor loss at the mounting screws. Original hands. Paper label inside the case is dark and stained. Ht 14 1/2Ò

Upson Brothers, Marion, Conn., for JC Brown, Bristol, Conn., 8 days, time and strike, spring brass movement stenciled shelf clock, c1850. The Upson brothers made cases and obtained movements from various sources.

Rosewood veneered case with some wear to the stenciling. Original painted and signed dial with some loss at the mounting screws. Original hands and tablets, the lower one with a likeness of J.C. Brown. Upson Brothers label, Brewster & Ingrahams movement and a J.C. Brown dial is not unusual. Ht 15Ó

William S Johnson, New York, NY, 8 days, time and strike, fusee spring powered brass movement in rosewood veneered case with ripple molding, c1850

Refinished rosewood veneered case in very nice condition. Original painted dial with some loss at the mounting screws and at the winding arbors. Original hour hand. Minute hand maybe a replacement, but is proper size and style. Nice label inside the case. Johnson was a New York retailer of clocks by Conn. manufacturers. Ht 14Ò

Atkins, Whiting & Co., Bristol, Conn., "rolling-pinion rolling-verge" 30 hours, time and strike, rosewood cottage clock, c1850

very few examples of these unusual movements are known, and the consigner had the dial off to observe the unique features. The case appears to be in very good decorated condition retaining some of the gilt stenciled decoration. The original paper label is complete. The original painted metal dial shows some wear and paint losses. The narrow decalcomania tablet, with some loss still clearly depicts an early train. Hands are replaced. It ticks and strikes but was not tested long-term. Ht 12"
