Wall School House or Drop Trunk Calendar

Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co., Winsted, Conn., "Office Drop Calendar" clock, 8 day, time and strike, with Gilbert's version of the famous Maranville's calendar system, and in a walnut case with carved trim.

there is a small bit of paper dial missing above the Month aperture, the top crest is a replacement and a piece of dark purple label missing on the left side in the lower box. Otherwise this is an excellent example of this model. Retains original dial, hands, pendulum and finish, plus good label on reverse [minor loss to label]. Gilbert made many drop octagons right after the Civil War with Maranville's patent metal calendar, but they came up with this paper over zinc, with card-stock day circle to circumvent the original patent and avoid royalties.

Welch, Spring & Co., Forestville, Conn., "Gale Drop Calendar Model No. 2" wall clock, case grained to simulate rosewood, turned wooden bezel, door with reverse painted tablet, and complex molded base, paper dial on metal pan, 8 day, time and strike,

this clock is in very good original condition. The case retains the original faux rosewood finish with minor scuffs and nicks. The original papered dial has some fading and discoloration and the original pendulum bob has some minor tarnish. The reverse painted tablet is original and in good condition The calendar mechanism is the 1877 patent, which was produced from 1874 to 1879. The dial is the 1871 patent.

William L. Gilbert Clock Co., Winsted, Conn., "Office Drop Calendar" wall hanging clock with an 8 day spring driven time and strike movement with Gilbert's simple calendar mechanism in a walnut and burl walnut veneered case.

The case retains some original finish with some additional finish applied. The three paper dials comprising the time dial and the calendar dials are original but have aged with dark spots and stains. Gilbert altered Maranville's patent calendar advancing mechanism to avoid paying him a royalty. The hands are original. The movement is signed. The glasses are original but the stenciling on the lower glass is a replacement. The gong has been bent out of position and will need to be readjusted for the striking hammer to hit the gong.

Ansonia Brass and Copper Co., Ansonia, Conn., "Drop Extra Calendar" wall clock with a spring driven 8 day time, strike movement with William A. Terry's patent calendar in a rosewood veneered case.

The rosewood veneered case has been refinished and now has a soft lustre, The original painted dial is in vey nice condition with minor flaking. The hands are original. The door glass are original but black has been rebacked. The pendulum bob is a replacement.

L, F, & W. W. Carter, Bristol, Conn., calendar wall clock with a weight driven 8 days timepiece movement and a B. B. Lewis perpetual calendar mechanism in a rosewood veneered case in the style of the Lewis No. 2 calendar.

The case retains its original finish, somewhat alligatored. The original painted dials have no paint loss but have some speckling which needs to be removed. The hands are original. The movement has solid plates and maintaining power with steel pivoted rolling pinions. The lower lock mechanism is absent.

Walnut and walnut burl veneered case in original finish has some slight damage to the two carved medallions just above the bottom door. Original paper dial has some damage along the bottom edge, at the top near the month opening and in a couple places at the day of the week openings. Original hands and pendulum. Original tablet is worn in places. The carving just above the bottom door is missing, but a nicely carved replacement is included. Nice label inside the case.

Rosewood and rosewood veneered case in original finish that has been cleaned and rubbed downed to a nice glow. Original paper dial has age darkened a little with some light stains, but still nice. Original hands and gold leaf and black tablet. The gilt border on the bottom door is now gold painted. The gilt printing on the black label inside case is faded, but readable. A few years ago we sold examples of these scarce calendars for three times our current estimates.

Rosewood veneered case in an old finish with a little wear to the veneer and the edge of the door on the latch side. The bottom bracket is missing. Original painted dial now has a clear varnish applied to protect the numbers. The time numbers have been strengthened There have been poorly matched color repairs at the mounting screws, top and bottom date changing arbors, in the center area and winding arbor hole. Original hands and tablet. Gilt border on bottom door overpainted with gold paint. Nice gold and blue label inside the case. Ht 31"
