Rare R. Gilmore Cincinnati Tall Case Clock,

in cherry and figured cherry and mahogany veneer, with poplar and pine secondary woods. Broken-arch pediment with free-standing turned columns, and diamond drop plinth at center (never had a finial). Waist has canted corners, crotch cherry veneer on the door, and cross-banded mahogany inlay below cove molding and surrounding dial and base. Wide waist molding above paneled base with ebonized quarter-round molding, crotch-veneered panel, and turned feet. English 8-day bell strike movement (unsigned), painted dial with European landscape in the dial arch, flowers in the spandrels, Roman numerals, and signed R. Gilmore / Cincinnati at center. Clock retains original glass, lock, and key, as well as old, probably original weights and pendulum. A fine Cincinnati case; 90.25" high x 20.5" wide x 10.5" deep. Robert Gilmore worked as a clock case maker on Main St. between 3rd and 4th from 1834 until he was bought out by Owen and Read in 1838. He had several cabinetmakers working for him making cases for imported works that he signed.
