E. Howard and Co., MARBLE DIAL No. 30, made for public use over large passage ways, 8-day weight driven, from South Station (?), with F/S adjust above 12. C.1880.
overall excellent original condition. There is one minor chip on the bottom edge of the dial and an old hairline at the left attaching hole, otherwise the dial is original and outstanding. Many articles have been written about the tower clock on the front facade of South Station, Boston, but this particular clock came from inside the station, over a large interior doorway, removed around 1985. We have been unable to find a foto to verify this, however it seems reasonable. The fact that the original dial paint is so well preserved shows that this did likely set over one of the 14 foot high doorways, and was thus only reachable by the weekly winder. The wooden portions retain their original finish, with a century of dirt and grime, still glossy where protected by the dial. See Howard 1874 catalog for details on this model. Clean, re-strung and running. Width = 52" Ht = 21"
