Simon Willard and Son, Boston, Mass., Circa 1828, 8-day time and bell strike Banjo or Patent Timepiece (two weight).
mahogany case in very clean condition in an old finish. Some minor age cracks in the half round molding on the throat panel. Original painted dial has some minor loss at the mounting pins. Dial is held in the case with two L turns. Signature on the dial appears to be authentic as the age cracks in the paint are reflected in the signature. Hands are original. Throat glass is a later replacement done on old glass. Old thin bottom glass is broken/ taped, but the painting was most likely done at a later time. Angular glue blocks for the tablets are replaced. Movement is mounted to the case with two large screws through the backboard, and is on a thick spacer which has always been there. Old sidearms probably a bit later. Finial is also a later replacement. Note that we have ordered a replacement lower tablet that will be included with the lot, and forwarded if not received in time. Ht 29.5"
